It ranks at #1 on IMDb and has an average approval rating of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. That movie of course in The Shawshank Redemption. While the film has been praised as of late, its early days, and the film only did OK at the box office, failing to win any Oscars despite being nominated. This film is like a good glass of wine in that it has aged with time. It was only last year that the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National film Registry, finding it "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
The Shawshank Redemption is an allegory for maintaining one's feeling of self-worth when placed in a hopeless position. The film emphasises the American dream where anybody, no matter their background, can achieve redemption and find their own identity. It is a must watch!
