The purge takes place in a hypothetical United States afflicted by overcrowded prisons and crime, the law has legalised any crimes from 12 hour period. It becomes a free for all, the police also has no authority and the hospitals are closed. During this year's purge there is an intruder in Ethan Hawke's characters house trying to spread chaos, with his family on the line he has to ensure him and his family make it through the night. I think this movie's depiction of a day where there is no law would be very similar to reality. That raises the question of why even in the 21st century humans are still so bestial.
